"Yakima, Washington is one of the best keep secrets in the USA. At one time the Chicago Tribune called the Yakima Valley Region "One of the last Shangrila's in America." Personally I have lived here since 1990, and this is a very true and acurate statement. Yakima, with a population of about 71,000, combined with surrounding cities brings an area population of about 120,000." " As weary and exhausted Ex-TV Producers from California, my husband and I and arrived into town with a sigh of relief, and unpacked in Yakima in a beautiful home that was both paid for, and in a wonderful community to raise our small children. The schools and staff actually "Looked normal," with both male and female teachers. Children played in Fall festivals, played socceer, basketball and baseball, learned ballet and jazz dancing, went to each others houses to play with friends, to splash in the creek and ride horses. I observed that many schools had male and female staff in the schools, a healthy balance for youth in the learning stages of life."
"In 1990, we moved to one of the most "Apple Pie America" places I had ever seen. A few years ago Yakima, WA. received a national award for "All America City." In more recent times, we have been on the Forbes City list for number one in new jobs for the Northwest region, with Kennewick, WA. being #2. Other national stats put us in the top five in the nation to buy or sell a house, and also one of the strongest regional economies in America during this economically challenging times of 2008-11." "Although it is said that Washington is a relatively an "unchurched " state, I have observed that the Yakima Valley Region boasts a wide varietry of well attended church fellowships from a variety of denominations." "Property is very affordable compared to most regions anywhere near the beauty and amenities we have here. Only about a 3 hour drive to Seattle or Portland, the big city is there when you want it. But for every day living you will love the low traffic, clean air, beautiful residential areas, great school districts, modern shopping Malls, Yakima Valley Commuinity College, great restaurants, outdoor cafes, and over 300 days of sunshine! The Yakima Valley Region has also become a well known region for producing world class wines. Boasting a climate very similar to Southern France, the region has approximately 35+ wineries and hundreds of acres of vineyards. Wine tasting rooms are open daily. Be sure to see the 'Visit Yakima' tab for more detail. "Living in Yakima means you will experience the four seasons in this beautiful region. Yakima is in the top 10 in the USA for Fall color. Although Fall color is predominant anywhere, a common passtime is to drive to the mountains nearby to see the "fall colors." Winter comes to Yakima with some snow, at least a few inches on the ground for a "White Christmas." But it is not likely you are going to get buried like those poor folks in the Northeast do! Okay, everybody, so we had a bad year in 1996, with more snow than usual, but that was not the norm! Four the last 5 years my daughter and I only shoveled the drive way three times. We think we are going to die if we get 10 inches these days.
Spring will knock you over with beauty with the sight of the pink and white blooming orchards, carefully manicured yards with tulips, dafoldils, roses, magnolias and pink dogwood trees everywhere. I love the sight of the snow on the tips of the hills and mountains in the distance, and yet the blue sunny skies and temps in the 50's and 60's."
"Yakima is the home of the Yakima Ski and the Yakima Ski Rack. The skiiers are very happy campers as White Pass Ski resort is only about 1 hour away on US hwy 12. In 2010, White Pass Ski Resort did a significant structural expansion, including a snow machine to help expand the weeks of skiing for their ski enthusiast clients!" "I just drove through hwy 12 from Yakima to Seattle on March 30th on clear roads and blue skies, escorted at my side by tall evergreens, rushing rivers and lakes at my side all along the way. Stopping in Packwood for lunch was a delight! What a cute mountain resort area with mountain peaks resembling the Alps. Okay, Summer is hot in Yakima...so you'd better be ready. Swimming pools are common in Yakima, and so is air conditioning, so you are okay. You can swim until midnight or later on those warm balmy nights. Did I cover it all...well there is much to discover abount one of the "last Shangrilas in America"..so you will just have to come and see for yourself. . The airport (YKM) is only about 10 or 15 minutes away from most areas...it's a 25 minute hop over from Seattle. Many people live here just for the fact that it is convenient location for traveling whether it's for business or pleasure."
